I am a Professor of Occupational Therapy and Faculty Lead for the Post-Professional Occupational Therapy Doctorate program at American International College in Springfield, Massachusetts. I teach courses in scholarship of teaching and learning in occupational therapy and occupational therapy theory, group dynamics, the development of psychosocial occupations, and the mental health process in OT. My research interests include pedagogy in occupational therapy education, cognitive disabilities, and trauma-informed care. As an occupational therapist and educator, I have dedicated my career toward improving the lives of individuals with cognitive disabilities and health conditions that interfere with participation and quality of life across the lifespan, working in day habilitation services, school-system occupational therapy, and residential settings in a career spanning three decades. I am a member of AOTA’s School Mental Health Community of Practice and in June I was certified as a Mental Health First Aid instructor.

Learning Objectives:
By the end of this event/presentation, participants will demonstrate increased knowledge and understanding from the oral presentations as indicated:
1. Identify the 7 critical pillars of 988 and relevant OT skills and knowledge specific to each, according to AOTA
2. Understand the components of “Mental Health First Aid” training and certification offered by the National Council for Mental Wellbeing, options for learning, skills taught, and relationship to OT tie-in to 988 pillars
3. Review “Every Moment Counts”, a mental health promotion initiative led by Susan Bazyck to help children and youth be mentally healthy
4. Learn how to access a free, 6-hour, self-paced continuing education course to build capacity of school personnel to promote positive mental health in children and youth aligned with the Every Moment Counts initiative
5. Define Positive Childhood Experiences (PCEs) and understand why it is essential to increase positive childhood experiences in order to facilitate resilience in those who have experienced trauma.
