Keynote Address by Shawn Phipps, Vice-President AOTA

In his role as the Chief Strategic Development Officer at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center, Dr. Phipps drives service line development, leadership growth, directs the implementation of key hospital-wide strategic initiatives, and engages all levels of the organization in creating a culture and commitment to quality improvement and innovation.

In his previous position as regional manager for Children's Medical Services in the Los Angeles County of Public Health, Dr. Phipps was responsible for managing several outpatient pediatric rehabilitation centers.

Dr. Phipps was also an occupational therapy supervisor and clinical specialist for a decade at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center, where his clinical experience included a wide variety of inpatient and outpatient conditions including traumatic brain injury, stroke, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, Guillain-Barré syndrome, and other neurological and orthopedic diagnoses.

Dr. Phipps also served as a clinical faculty member at California State University Dominguez Hills and worked as an occupational therapist in several California hospitals including Children's Hospital Los Angeles, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Daniel Freeman Memorial Hospital, Huntington Memorial Hospital, and City of Hope National Medical Center.

Dr. Phipps holds a BS in occupational therapy from the University of Southern California, a MS in occupational therapy from San Jose State University, and a PhD in healthcare administration from Touro University.

Dr. Phipps is currently serving as president of the Occupational Therapy Association of California. He also serves on the USC Board of Councilors in the Division of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy at the University of Southern California.

Dr. Phipps is the recipient of many awards, including the AOTA Roster of Fellows (2011), the AOTA Cordelia Myers Writer's Award (2008); and the 2005 OT Practice Award from the Occupational Therapy Association of California (2005).
